The choice of HEIs and faculties

The Ranking took into account universities (and - within them - unit (faculties) with the the right to confer PhD degree.

Categorization by the field of study

The categorization of the field of studies and groups of fields of study was made according to the National Framework Classification - wherein a group of economic fields was separated from social fields of study.

Indicators and weight

The ranking is based on a maximum of twelve criteria. Certain criteria are specific for a particular field of study and may only occur in this group. Depending on the field of study, the impact of the criterion on the index ranking was evaluated in various weight rates. 100 points is the best result within a given criterion. Other results are relative values in relation to the best outcome in a given criterion. The final index is standardized to 100 for best results.

PRESTIGE

Employer reputation - a number of indications of a university in a survey conducted by research company INDICATOR on the instruction of "Perspektywy" on a representative group of employers in Poland. The survey was conducted in 2016 by CATI-CAVI method. Companies indicated three main fields of activity connected with adequate groups of fields of study. They also indicate universities companies want to employ garduates. Employment of graduates of a university provides additional points. The survey included 5400 business entities from all the sectors in Poland.

This criterion is a "university" criterion rather than "departmental". Since employers can distinguish graduates according to the university, they are not able to identify the faculty. Using example the Warsaw Electronics Faculty or Electric Faculty the employer knows that it employs a student of the university, but does not distinguish if he/she finished. The result are the same factors of that criterion for the different units of the same university, in the same group of fields of study.

Academic reputation (teaching) - indications in a survey conducted among university academic staff (full professors as well as PhDs with habilitation, who obtained their current academic title within the previous three years). The study did not include votes for universities were respondents are employed. The survey was conducted via the Internet, CAWI. Each of the respondents defined the field, discipline and learning area and field of study. The criterion is based on the results of the last three years. Just as described in the criterion "academic reputation" this is the criterion of "university" rather than "faculty", ie. academic teachers in most cases are not able to recommend a specific unit of the university but the entire university.

SCIENCE PUBLICATIONS

Publications - number of publications included in the SCOPUS database in 2011-2015. Each publication is assigned - according to SCOPUS database - to the appropriate fields of science, including the quality of the title (journal). The sum publications is counted in ratio to the number of academic staff in the group of fields of study. Scopus database classification was assigned to ranking groups of fields of study. Since the classification of the database does not fully reflect the division of fields of study, a publication could be assigned to more than one group of fields of study ranking.

Citation – ratio of citations in 2011-2015 to the number of publications.

H-index -ratio of publications and their citation measured by the method of Hirsch for thye years 2011-2015. Publications are assigned to the appropriate fields of study on the same principle as described in the criterion "publications".

ACADEMIC POTENTIAL

Parametric evaluation - rating given by KEJN to individual units of universities not the faculty. Index ranking depends on the category given to the unit. In the case of units with many fields of study the unit will have the same index ranking in the groups in which it is classified.

Rights to confer academic degrees - sum of the rights to confer PhD degrees with habilitation was weighted 1,5 and the ratio of rights to confer PhD degree was weighted 1 for the the university leading a field of study.

Academic degrees - the number of obtained - PhD degrees with 1 weight and PhDs with habilitation with 1.5 weight to the total number of full-time staff in the unit.

Academic staff with highest qualifications - the number of teachers full-time employed (PhD with 1.0 weight; PhD with habilitation with 1.5 weight and professors with 2.0 weight), in relation to the number of students at a university (full time students with 1.0 weight; part time students with 0.6 weight) Due to the lack of possibility of assignment of staff to the particular field of study and that the tasks implemented by academics are often in more than one field of study led by the university. The criterion took the employment status of the individual into account. By analogy the number of students of all fields was taken into account, not just students in one field.

PKA distinctive - current assessment of the distinctive PKA posession, without distinguishing fields of study, for which the entity has obtained the distinctive note.

ADDITIONAL CRITERIA

Patents and protection rights - the number of patents and other rights in the Polish Patent Office in the years 2014 - 2015 in relation to the number of professors, PhDs with habilitation and PhDs full-time employed in the unit.

Vocational qualifying examinations - additional criteria specific to the field or group of fields was included in some instances, among others the State Medical Exam and the examination results on the legal apprenticeship. The criterion included the ratio of a passed exam.
